C-O bond breaking and bond forming strategies: lessons from biology and heterogeneous biofuels catalysts

Several mechanistic strategies for the selective catalytic addition and removal of oxygen atoms from organic molecules will be presented. An effort to find common themes in the high-valent iron strategies nature uses and the lower valent ruthenium-based approaches our lab has developed in a series of heterogeneous catalysts for biofuels upgrading will be discussed. Results from mechanistic work on alkane monooxygenase (AlkB), OleT and Ru and Ru/Ni TiO2 catalysts will be described in this seminar.
